Direct Accountability Program
The Direct Accountability Program is an alternative to prosecution for eligible adult individuals (18+) charged with minor criminal infractions. Participants must willingly accept responsibility for their actions and demonstrate an interest in making amends through an approved sanction agreement.
The program uses community sanctions to promote a sense of accountability for the offender. Examples of previously approved sanctions include:
- Restitution
- A formal apology
- Volunteer work
- A charitable donation
- Program participation
- Attendance at a presentation
- A peace bond
- Forfeiture of seized property
The Direct Accountability Program is integral to the John Howard Society of Niagara’s Justice division.
