Justice Services Volunteer Program
Volunteers in this program act as representatives of the John Howard Society of Niagara, the Ministry of the Solicitor General, and the community. A variety of unique volunteer positions are available, including:
- Case Aid Volunteers assist Probation and Parole officers with clerical work and group programming.
- Program Facilitator volunteers help facilitate psycho-educational programming to members of the community, as well as to inmates at the Niagara Detention Centre.
- Support Staff volunteers assist with greeting clients, answering phones, and completing administrative tasks at Probation and Parole offices and John Howard Society of Niagara offices around the region.
Qualifications:
- Some post-secondary education; recommended areas of study include, but are not limited to, Community and Justice Services, Social Service Worker, or Human Services
- Previous volunteer experience an asset
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with strong attention to detail
- Ability to attend various sites across the region
- Satisfactory criminal reference check in accordance with JHSoN policy
Responsibilities:
- Professional and mature attitude
- Develop and maintain working relationships with JHSoN staff, clients, Probation and Parole Officers, Correctional Officers, and Court Officials
- Attend volunteer meetings as needed
- Commit to a minimum of one year with the program, at one or more days per week (hours vary by program)
All successful candidates must complete program-specific training. Volunteers report to the Justice Services Volunteer Program Coordinator.
